Over the last few years
KPNAA has moved toward a very active Executive Board structure in
order to keep up with the pace of change in our profession. The
majority of our business has been conducted in general membership
sessions on a quarterly basis. While membership advocacy and input
is still priority-one, the advantage of a constantly communicating
Executive Board has proven invaluable as KPNAA strategizes and
responds to today's challenges and tomorrow's opportunity.
We retained our President and President-elect officers, but our Vice
President is now known as “First Trustee”. We have a “Second
Trustee” position, which technically replaced the former Secretary.
Our former Treasurer is now the “Third Trustee”.
Why all these changes? KPNAA is successfully and swiftly moving into
the mainstream of the revised Permanente vision of the future. With
the contracting of Maple Street Management, many of the duties
better left to those with clerical and mathematical skills, and the
time to fully attend to them, have been covered in their contract.
CRNA’s are now left free to focus on anesthesia, and also to the
many new Labor-Management partnership committees arising in the
region.
What do these new job descriptions and titles demand?
The President-elect runs for a position that commits him/her to a
3-year obligation. For the first year as President-elect, the
officer works closely with the President on all of the internal
workings of the association. He/she steps in for the President in
any circumstance where the President is absent or must vacate office
early. The President-elect is the CRNA representative to the
grievance committee, and must be present at all grievances that go
beyond step two.
At the end of the term of office the President-elect succeeds to the
office of President, the principal elective officer of the
association.
The duties of the President are many and varied. These
responsibilities are too numerous to be included here, but can be
found in KPNAA’s bylaws. At the close of that term of office, the
President becomes the “First Trustee”. In this position, he/she has
a two year perspective on the activities of the Association, can act
as historian and consultant, and provides stability and continuity
to the board.
The general secretarial duties will be taken over by Maple Street
Management. However, the newly elected “Second Trustee”, besides
being available to sit on or chair other necessary interim
committees, serves as both bylaws and nominating committee chair.
The “Third Trustee” remains as the chief financial officer, and
oversees and consults on MSM’s handling of KPNAA accounts and
finances. She/he continues as chair of the Finance and Budget
committee.
This is the new face of your elected Executive board. Many other
duties are assigned to our Business Representative position - a
non-voting but very hard working office currently occupied by Sandra
Even and Nancy Boyajian and Claudia Gomez.
